Learning Meditation

Is like Learning to Breathe

learning meditation is simple

Learning meditation is far simpler than most people think. It is as easy as learning how to breathe correctly. In my healing practice I have had many people come in and tell me at the beginning of the session that they just can’t meditate. But when it comes to the meditation part of the session they easily enter the meditative state.

Other people I know struggle with the entire concept of meditation. They tell me that meditation is for flakes or spiritual zealots and they don’t need to meditate. There I have to repress a laugh.

You Already Know How to Meditate

I then ask them:

“Have you ever just relaxed on a couch and listened to a beautiful piece of gentle music And allowed your mind to become still?”

Most will answer:

“Yes."

And so I tell them that they already know how to meditate. Which is the truth.

I also ask them:

“Do you ever take time out to go and sit or walk in nature? Or, do you ever participate in a sport that requires focus and mental clarity?”

Again they will answer:

“Yes”

Again I will point out to them, they are already meditating.

Finally I ask:

“Do you ever pray? Or do you ever sit down with an obstacle in your life and allow yourself to find a solution to that obstacle be it personal, financial, relationship
or health based?”

Again they will answer:

“Yes.”

Life Is Beautiful

And so I then point out to them that they are always learning meditation. We all are. It is one of those beautiful things in life. Meditation is a continuous process. It is a process of growth. We learn meditation at school, learning to meditate on a formula, a piece of information or a creative task.

Every time you are able to focus wholly and completely on something, whether a task, a sunset, a lover, a piece of music or silence, you are learning meditation.

A Greater Depth of Being
Through Learning Meditation

But you can go deeper, so that everything becomes a fully conscious meditation. Then you no longer need to close your eyes and sit / lie still. But to do that does require that you go through the process of learning how to consciously meditate in the more traditional sense. Fortunately, now-a-days, that learning period is significantly reduced due to the speed at which the world is changing and evolving.

Meditation Techniques
and the Techniqueless Technique

Many people now talk of the techniqueless technique. The movie the Secret demonstrates this by simply using your thoughts, feelings and an attitude of gratitude. However, one of my teachers pointed out to me that sometimes it is required that you learn the basic meditation techniques first. Once the techniques are fully integrated into your consciousness, then it is easy to tap into the simplicity of doing things techniquelessly.

The good news is it only takes you 21 days to create a new pathway in the brain, which sets a fully integrated habit. For more extensive research on this topic read Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwel Maltz. So, 21 days and you have gone through the process. You only ever have to go through a process like this once for it to fully integrated into your being. Pretty easy and simple hmm...? So let us look at the basics of learning meditation.
