A Physical Benefit of Meditation

Brainwave entrainment is a physical benefit of meditation that can be measured on an EEG (Electroencephalogram).

It has been noted scientifically that when a person becomes disciplined in the art of meditation it becomes very easy for that person to take charge of the frequencies and patterns of their brainwaves.

It is a synch for a disciplined practitioner of meditation to slip into the alpha and theta brainwave states, even in their everyday affairs.

Taking charge of your brainwaves is a simple process. If you think about the brain, it is basically an incredible piece of organic computing hardware. It is a transducer that feeds information to the mind via the sensory perceptions of the body, and then acts out the instructions that the mind feeds back to the body through the brain. As yet no one has ever been able to find the mind / soul that wields the brain. The brain is merely the computer. So who runs that brain…?

Now there are certain parts of the brain which are sort of run on autopilot. Until conscious attention is given to these parts of the brain, they run according to a set of override instructions. A prime example being the fight or flight reflex or, if you want to get scientific about it, the sympathetic nervous system. So if you don't start meditating consciously you are at the mercy of divine intervention from your soul. This may be pleasant or unpleasant, depending on the severity of your lack of awareness.



Living Simply or Just Surviving

Through the brainwave entrainment of the meditative state you are able to consciously take charge of the rhythms and frequencies of the brain. Thus you are able to shift away from the beta state into the deeper states of alpha and theta brainwave activity. The beta state is the normal state for most people, it is in this state that the internal dialogue of the intellect is on over-drive. It is the most basic state for survival. But do you want to be in survival mode all the time? Or would you actually like to be in a state where you are living life all the time…?

When you are able to calm the mind at will and drop into the alpha and theta states the body follows suite. From here you start to override negative tensions and twitches in the body. Further more, it is through the brainwave entrainment of meditation that the alpha and theta states are entered. These two states are a direct result of entering into the space of pure inspiration and direct communication with the divine.
